About Us

- Manufacturers of World Class Professional Quality Artist Colors, Tools and Accessories -

With head offices in Osaka Japan, the company was formed just before the turn of the last century, and took the name of the much revered European artist Hans Holbein in the 1930’s. From that time, Holbein’s presence has been significant, not only in Southeast Asia, but also in North America, Australia and Europe.

From left to right: Tim, Peter, Doug

One of the world’s largest manufacturers of professional artists’ materials, Holbein Artist Materials, the trading company, and Holbein Works, the color factory collectively employ 210 people, including 5 color chemists. In addition, Holbein has 40 subsidiary and associate companies manufacturing everything from framing material and manikins to quality metal and porcelain accessories, paper products, and etching presses.

Holbein color chemists, using only the finest pigments available, have achieved the highest standards of quality control in the industry, working to precise standards at each stage of the manufacturing process. The result is unerring consistency from production run to production run.

Holbein is unique in the art material trade because they do not produce any entry level/student quality color products. Each of the 16 artists’ grade color lines is adapted to meet the special requirements of the professional/serious artists with permanence, brilliance, and technique in mind. Indeed, the full range of Holbein color products offer unique characteristics which set them apart from all competitive lines regardless of origin.

HK Holbein is the North American Agent for all things Holbein. Founded in 1977 by Peter Hopper, HK Holbein has two offices one in Burlington, Vermont and Montreal, Canada. Peter retired in 1996 and today two of his sons, Douglas (President) and Timothy (Executive Vice President) now run HK Holbein and continue close ties with Osaka.

HK Holbein also distributes Strathmore Paper, Stratford & York Artist Brushes, Educational Colors, General Pencil and a variety of other lines, all related to the art material trade.

Dedicated to excellence, Holbein believes there is no substitute for quality. Holbein is the artists’ choice, every time!

Testimonials

  • As a painter who loves to experiment with both watercolour and acrylic I count on Holbein paints for their uniform viscosity and finely ground, glorious pigments. The exceptional range of products enable me to achieve elegant flowing transparent glazes and velvety, smooth opaque passages. Holbein is my unequivocal choice!

    by Linda Kemp
  • Holbein paints are the finest materials I have ever used, and I’ve tried them all (other brands).  I trust the quality of all Holbein products because they sturdy and work very hard to use the finest materials from all over the world, to make their product the best on the market.

    by Randy Martinez
  • “I highly recommend Holbein watercolors to all of my students and artists friends that are serious about using the best artist quality watercolor available. Holbein colors are both intense and superb to work with. Holbein watercolors never dry to a hard clump and re-liquefy immediately when hit with just a few drops of water. These attributes and many more, make Holbein the best watercolor available today. I encourage all other artists to try this fantastic watercolor”

    by David Becker
  • “I have painted with Holbein Acrylic Paints for twenty years, on canvas as well as 300lb watercolor paper. I have personally tested each and painted with the complete line of 113 colors. They flow smoothly from my brush and intermix beautifully and cohesively every time. The Heavy Body Acrylic is light, yet thick enough for creating texture when I want it”

by - Robert Burridge on Holbein Heavy Body Artist Acrylic
  • Holbein’s extensive range of paints provides highly saturated colors that remain true to the natural qualities, hue and purity of organic and inorganic pigments. This is essential to me as my personal technique incorporates the layering of transparent and opaque applications of color as I attempt to create unique visual effects.

    by Linda Kemp
  • “Holbein never fails to impress with the quality of their paints, and most of all I am impressed at how enthusiastically they stand behind their products.  I feel strongly about using well crafted supplies that are created by people who believe in them.  After using the water based oils for a time, I was introduced to their gouache, which I adore.  Their traditional oil paints are what I am using on my current project.  The colors are bright, vibrant and lasting.”

    by Echo Chernik
  • My favorite aspect of the entire Holbein product line is the consistency of the pigments. Whether you are using oil, acrylic, Ink, or Acryla Gouache, the pigments are consistent. It makes my life as an illustrator, who sometimes has to retouch my artwork, so much easier. Quite honestly, I have yet to find any limitations using Holbein products, which means my creativity will never have limitation, and I love that.

    by Randy Martinez
  • “These acrylic fluid paints are more fluid and act like an intense watercolor, dye, stain or patina. Another exceptional quality line from Holbein.”

    by Robert Burridge
  • My experience with Holbein art materials has been a real pleasure, especially the Aeroflash acrylic ink. Simply put, Aeroflash is THE best acrylic ink paint on the planet! Very forgiving when I need to erase, without leaving a rubbery sheen and stays matte as it should! Aeroflash has a beautiful matte finish, not to mention is available in 60 gorgeous colors. My art would suffer seriously without Holbein’s Aeroflash!

    by Jerry VanderStelt
  • For performance and reliability I depend on the unsurpassed quality of Holbein products.

    by Linda Kemp
  • Holbein Aeroflash is second to none. The paint flows consistently, and when it is applied the color doesn’t die. I have been able to achieve results and depth I never thought possible.

Pastels

- Professional Quality Pastels -

Holbein Artists’ Oil Pastels

Endorsed by the Oil Pastel Association of America (OPA), Holbein Artists’ Oil Pastels feel and move like a chalk pastel without the dust.

Holbein Oil Artists’ Oil Pastels are the culmination of over 60 years of research, development and manufacturing expertise in the oil pastel field. The manufacturing process is entirely automated to ensure uniform color distribution throughout the entire stick. Individually sleeved, each stick is made in a square shape for working versatility.

Due to the parafin content and highly refined mineral oil, they will never harden completely. Therefore, all finished work should be mounted under glass.

Holbein Artists’ Oil Pastels can be applied to almost any ground. They are used extensively over finished acrylic and oil paintings.

Unlike oil Pastels that uses vegetable oil, Holbein Artists’ Oil Pastels are inert once laid down and will not dry out or crack.

Holbein Artists’ Soft Pastels

Using a unique manufacturing process Holbein has developed an exceptional range of 144 Artist quality soft pastels which offer great soft powder richness in covering and blending power.

The manufacturing process is entirely computerized and is mechanized from inception to final product. In the final stages of production a computer lens scans every stick in order to guarantee uniform distribution of pigment and pigment purity.

Individually sleeved, each stick is made in a square shape for working versatility.

Holbein Academic Oil Pastel

A 48 color student grade palette.

Highest quality student grade oil pastel available. Brilliant color, easy to handle, blend and clean.

Watercolors

- Artists' Quality Watercolors -

Holbein Artists’ Watercolor

Much of the incomparable, world-wide reputation that Holbein enjoys is due to the exceptional quality of their Artist Watercolor. Originally introduced in the early 1920’s and now available in 108 highly concentrated colors, Holbein Artist Watercolor is a European style transparent watercolor which preserves the brush handling qualities inherent in Japanese watercolor techniques.

More finely ground than any other artist watercolor, Holbein Artist Watercolor is produced without ox-gall, animal by-products or other dispersing agents. This affords the user greater control in the dispersal of their pigments, enhances handling qualities and delivers color of unequaled intensity, purity and reliability for brilliant transparent washes and/or powerful, clean darks.

Holbein Artist Watercolor is available in two formats, in tubes (5 ml and 15 ml) or in a limited range of half pans. Holbein Artist Watercolor is specifically designed to rewet instantly and not deteriorate in the tube, pan or palette.

Holbein Artist Watercolor is the standard by which all others are measured against.

new

Holbein Half Pan Watercolor

Brilliant and beautiful, Holbein Artist Half Pan Watercolor has been produced for all those who enjoy watercolor portability.

Available in 48 colors, Holbein Artist Pan Watercolor uses the highest concentration of pigment possible while affording the user great ease in re-wet ability.

Holbein uses a combination of both traditional and modern pigments, ensuring that Holbein Half Pan Watercolor offer exceptional brilliance, excellent lightfast ratings and crisp, clean results without muddiness!

Each open stock pan contains a magnetic strip to secure placement and hold onto any steel folding travel palette.

Holbein “Irodori” Antique Watercolor

Take a step back into time when using Holbein Irodori watercolor. With 48 vibrant color to choose from, Irodori was created to reproduce the palette once used by Japanese Artists 15 centuries ago.

Irodori, pronounced (ear-row-door-e), Antique Watercolor was introduced in 1999. Production of Irodori is specifically designed so that every color granulates and is more opaque than contemporary watercolor, two traits commonly found in Japanese Watercolor paintings.

The high gum Arabic content of Irodori will deliver exceptional covering power and unlike traditional moist transparent watercolor, Irodori will not adhere to your palette once dry. Holbein recommends that when using Irodori, artists should only squeeze out what is needed for immediately use and store balance in the tube.

Mediums & Varnishes

- Unparalled Mediums For Every Artist -

Holbein Oil Mediums

The consistency of oil paints may be enhanced and altered by using oil painting mediums. It has been said that Oil Colors are the actors on the stage, whilst the Painting Oils, Varnishes and Mediums are the Directors. The finished production is the combination of the Oil Colors brilliantly acting their parts on the surface, directed by the Painting Oils, Varnishes and Mediums from behind the scenes. Never think of Painting Oils, Varnishes and Mediums just as thinners for oil color; they are more than that. The entire painting technique can be controlled by these directors in your production. Holbein uses the very finest ingredients to produce a variety of widely acclaimed Painting Oils, Varnishes, Mediums.

Alex Ross

Alex_Ross_smNelson Alexander “Alex” Ross is an American comic book writer/artist known primarily for his painted interiors, covers, and design work. He first became known with the 1994 miniseries Marvels, on which he collaborated with writer Kurt Busiek for Marvel Comics. He has since done a variety of projects for both Marvel and DC Comics, such as the 1996 miniseries Kingdom Come, which Ross co-wrote. Since then he has done covers and character designs for Busiek’s series Astro City, and various projects for Dynamite Entertainment. His feature film work includes concept and narrative art for Spider-Man and Spider-Man 2, and DVD packaging art for the M. Night Shyamalan film, Unbreakable. He has done covers for TV Guide, promotional artwork for the Academy Awards, posters and packaging design for video games, and his renditions of superheroes have been merchandised as action figures. Ross’ style has been said to exhibit “a Norman-Rockwell-meets-George-Pérez vibe”, and has been praised for its realistic, human depictions of classic comic book characters. His rendering style, his attention to detail, and the perceived tendency of his characters to be depicted staring off into the distance in cover images has been satirized in Mad magazine. Because of the time it takes Ross to produce his art, he primarily serves as a plotter and/or cover artist. Comics Buyer’s Guide Senior Editor Maggie Thompson, commenting on that publication’s retirement of the Favorite Painter award from their CBG Fan Awards due to Ross’ domination of that category, stated in 2010, “Ross may simply be the field’s Favorite Painter, period.”

Heather Theurer

Heather_2014Heather’s paintings are the product of decades of observation of people, environments, animals and textiles. Although she was not able to obtain a formal education in art, all her studies of the natural world in addition to the works of great artists including the renaissance masters, the pre-raphaelites of the late 19th century and modern masters have influenced he work in a way she couldn’t imagine getting in a classroom. Themes in her work include religious symbolism, fantasy realism, equine and wildlife, and bold reworking of Disney characters. Her process in painting is constantly morphing as she applies new techniques, but most often consist of a multitude layers of paint and glazes (as many as 20 or so in some cases) to reach the desired depth and detail that dominates her work.

Shared and collected around the world, Heather Theurer’s paintings are constructed in the midst of a bustling family with five children in Las Vegas, Nevada. Regardless of the challenges, her art has gone on to get the attention of USA Today and the LA Times, garnered contracts with Disney Fine Art and Fantasy Con, and received recognition and awards from respected organizations such as Art Renewal Center, Artist’s Magazine and Spectrum, among others.
