ARTISTS' OIL COLOR
Holbein Foundation Colors
Many artists overlook or are unaware of the advantages of
underpainting. Whether modern or ancient, the professional
artist seldom failed to prepare the painting ground.
Underpainting a proper foundation not only provides a barrier
between oil painting and primed surface, but will greatly
enhance the full and lasting qualities of color. Foundation
white and the three colors are specially formulated of
quick-drying silver white.
Despite the availability of many
good canvasses in fine, moderate and rough grain, the most
suitable surface in texture and colortone will be the surface
the individual artist prepares. Quick-drying (24-30 hours),
Holbein Foundation Colors may be used to build a foundation
through application of rough but thin layers and may be used
to prepare excellent impasto surfaces. Thick applications
should be avoided as they can lessen the adhesion qualities of
the finished painting.
All four foundation colors are a high
percentage pigment in linseed oil. All include basic Lead
Carbonate (77597) Titanium Dioxide (77891) and Calcium
Carbonate (77220) and are *** permanency rated. Additionally
Greenish, Grey and Umber include Chromium Sesquioxide (77288).
Bone Black (77267) and Native Earth (77491) respectively.
