DUO WATER SOLUBLE OIL
Sean Dye on why Holbein's Duo Aqua Oil is simply great paint:
I started using Holbein's traditional oil color in 1981. Now twenty years later I have become accustomed to working with professional artist quality pigments. Each time I open a tube of Holbein Oil Color, I can be assured of uniform grinding and vehicle consistency for all of my favorite pigments. Nothing has changed with Holbein's line of 80 water-soluble oils. With high pigment content, superb tinting power and an incredibly complete line of colors, what more could an oil painter ask for? All artists should try this exciting new product. Like all of Holbein's paints, these are simply the best paint money can buy.
Benefits of Water-Soluble Oil Color:
There are many exciting benefits associated with the new oils. Since I often have my children in the studio, I am happy to keep harsh solvents out of the studio. I have been painting en plein air for many years. Transporting solvent has always been a hassle and acrylic paints dried almost as soon as they hit the Palette. Water-soluble oils were the answer. I can put the paint on the palette and not worry about it drying out before getting the pigment on my canvas. The paint dries in approximately 1/2 the time of traditional oils depending on which painting techniques are employed. The somewhat faster drying time is helpful when plen air painting. To slow drying time for studio paintings, Holbein makes Duo Water-Soluble Linseed Oil. This also increases film strength and adds luster to the painting.
Duo Aqua Oil's Compatibility with Other Mediums:
For artists with many tubes of traditional color in the studio, these paints can be mixed safely with the Duo Aqua Oils. It is important that the traditional oils do not exceed 30% of the total volume or water-solubility may be lost. For mixtures over 30%, the artist may use traditional solvents and mediums. Traditional mediums may also be used as long as the proportion follows the same 30% rule. I find that the Aqua Oil sits nicely on top of an under-painting of Holbein's Acryla Gouache or Gesso. The Holbein chemists tell me that this amazing paint can also be mixed safely with all other water-soluble painting mediums including watercolor, gouache and acrylic (A few drops of water may be needed/recommended for blending).
Series 220 Hard "Resable" Brushes by Holbein:
I love the way these brushes handle. The hardened nylon is perfectly suited for the relatively firm consistency of oil colors, including the new Holbein Duo Aqua Oils. The superb construction of these brushes allows for the utmost control. I have used these brushes on smooth and rough surfaces and they handle very well. The bristles of these brushes have so much "snap", that they never lose their springiness even after soaking in water for extended periods of time.
The Sean Dye Landscape Set:
Seven basic mixing colors: Two reds - Alizarin Crimson (cool) and Vermilion (warm): Two blues - Ultramarine (cool) and Green Blue (warm): Two yellows - Light yellow (warm) and Lemon (cool) and Titanium White. Five favorite landscape colors: Sap Green - a natural, soft, transparent green: Marigold - a warm, golden, glazing yellow: Light Green - a bold, brilliant, bright green: Blue Violet - a deep rich dark valuable for mixing shadows: Burnt Sienna - a great reddish neutral that works well for depicting many types of soils as well as under-painting greens. This is a great compact set that caneasily go into the field.
