DRYING MEDIUMS
Siccatif D'Holbein/Siccatif D'HolbeinBlanc (Drying Oil) - When more rapid drying is desired, 2 to 3 drops of this oil is effective. It has a fast drying speed, so a very small quantity of this oil is sufficient. Use this dryer sparingly, less than 10% of oil color, or less 3% of painting medium, otherwise cracks may result in the finished painting surface. The color is crystal white and although the drying speed is slightly slower than Siccatif d'Holbein, this medium can be advantageously mixed with light oil colors such as yellow, white etc.
Pate Siccatif (Cream in Tube) - Tubed pasted Siccatif. Generally, liquid dryer makes oil colors softer and thinner. To prevent this, paste dryer is recommended to maintain the body of the oil color.
Quick Drying Medium - A non-yellowing mixture of stand oil, resin and refined petroleum oil. This medium, when mixed with oil color, will accelerate drying and harden the painting surface. As a glaze, it will provide a glossy surface which deepens the color. Clean the rim of the jar after use to avoid adhesion with lid.
Painting Medium Jelly - A gel viscosity quick-drying mixture of petroleum oil, siccatif and alkyd resin which may be freely mixed with oil color to produce a quick-dried durable surface without any color change. Keep jar capped when not in use.
Siccatif D'Holbein (Courtrai) - A mixture of three mineral salts, cobalt, lead and manganese. Only a small amount (not more than 10% of oil color) is required to greatly accelerate drying oil paintings through the entire layer of color. The medium will darken the color mixture in use but the original color will return when dry.
Japan Gold Size - Made from copal resin dissolved in turpentine and vegetable processing oils. Japan Gold Size may be used for tempera painting or as an oil painting medium, but it is primarily designed for gilding (gold Leaf). Dilute in 3 parts of turpentine and applied to a non-absorptive surface, the medium must dry to an almost dry stage of tackiness before applying the leaf which should be pressed on with a clean piece of cotton. Do not rub. Drying may be retarded by mixing with oil color.
